Die Aktivität scheint sich zu verstärken. Die Region rund ums Johnston-Observatorium (5 Kilometer vom Dom entfernt) wurde nach einem erneuten Ausbruch (habe ich leider verpasst) evakuiert:

The government has raised the alert level at Mount St. Helens and told hundreds of visitors in the area to leave.

The volcano in Washington state is now on a Level Three alert, meaning the next blast could threaten life and property. Officials made the change after a steam release Saturday was followed by a powerful tremor. They said that earthquake was much stronger than one following Friday's small eruption at the mountain.

The tremors from Saturday's blast were picked up as far away as
central Oregon.

Few people live in the area around the volcano, but officials did tell hundreds of visitors to leave an observatory that sits five miles away.

Mount St. Helens has proven its deadly potential in the past. In 1980, a massive eruption killed 57 people.

Auf der Livecam selbst ist es aber noch ruhig. Diese befindet sich i. Ü. beim Johnston-Observatorium.

Nach dem 50-minütigen Langperiodischen Beben, nach welchem der Alert-Level auf die höchste Stufe (THREE) erhöht wurde, herrscht im Moment weiterhin starke seismische Aktivität. So stark wie vor dem Langperiodischen Beben ist die Aktivität allerdings noch nicht, so dass ich denke, dass es noch ein paar Stunden dauert bis zum nächsten Ereignis.

Current status is Volcano Alert (Alert Level 3); aviation color code RED

At 2 pm today, we increased the alert level to Volcano Alert due to a change in the character of seismic signals (50-minute-long tremor) that occurred immediately after the small steam emission at 12:15. Since the tremor stopped, seismic character has changed back to the type of earthquakes we have detected since the beginning of the volcanic unrest. Earthquakes are occurring at a rate of 1-2 per minute with maximum earthquake magnitues of about M3. All earthquake locations remain shallow.

Today field crews took additional thermal images of the dome and crater. Deformation crews were in the field retrieving data from GPS instruments. Results are not yet available from today's late gas flight.

Currently wind forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), combined with eruption models, show winds this evening will be from the east and southeast and any ash clouds will drift to the west and northwest.

Aktuell gibt es wieder einen "Harmonic Tremor" was auf Magma Bewegung zurückzuführen ist! Leider dauert es noch ein paar Stunden bis es wieder Tag wird und auf der Webcam was zu sehen ist...

Nachdem die seismische Aktivität sich heute auf einem leicht tieferen Level als Gestern eingependelt hat, steigt sie seit 21:30 UTC = 14:30 PDT wieder deutlich an.

Die Aktivität am St. Helens hält nach wie vor an: Erdbeben der Magnitude 3 alle 5 Minuten, Schwefelhydroxid und CO2 Ausstoss, Hebung des Gletsches auf der Südseite des Doms um 10ner von Metern, was alles auf den Aufstieg von frischem, gasreichem Magma hindeutet. Wie es mit den langperiodischen Seismischen Ereignissen aussieht, kann ich aktuell nicht sagen, da ich keine entsprechende Information gefunden habe, und ich mich bei der Interpretation der Seismischen Kurven nicht auf die Äste rauslassen will...... der Alert Level bleibt jedenfalls auf der Stufe 3 (von maximal 4). At 2 pm yesterday, we increased the alert level to Volcano Alert due to a change in the character of seismic signals (50 minute long tremor) that occurred immediately after a steam emission at 12:16 P.M., recognition of ongoing uplift of the crater floor, and reports of sulfur gas odor. In addition, we believe that there is a significantly increased probability that gas-rich magma is moving toward the surface. After another period of tremor starting at 2:57 A.M. this morning, seismicity returned to discrete earthquakes. Seismic activity decreased gradually until about 2:00 P.M. then increased again, reaching levels comparable to those prior to steam and ash eruptions. M3 earthquakes are occurring at a rate of about one every 5 minutes. All earthquake locations remain shallow.

Yesterday’s gas sensing flights detected significant concentrations of carbon dioxide north and west of the dome. No significant levels of sulfur gasses were detected. Hydrogen sulfide odors detected by helicopter crews are attributed to steam emissions. These low levels of hydrogen sulfide are likely the result of boiling of the hydrothermal system.

Results from GPS measurements indicate no significant deformation of the outer flanks of the volcano. However, visual observations and photographic analysis show large-scale uplift (10’s of meters) of part of the glacier and a nearby segment of the south flank of the lava dome. This suggests rise of magma to shallow levels. Additional steam and ash eruptions could occur at any time. There is also an increased probability of larger magnitude and more ash-rich eruptions.

Today field crews took additional thermal images of the dome and crater and conducted gas sensing, infrared and geologic observation flights. Deformation crews retrieved data from GPS instruments and lowered a new GPS station from a helicopter onto the dome. In addition, two telemetered microphones are now operating to detect explosions.

Wind forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), combined with eruption models, show winds this evening will be from the east and southeast and any ash clouds would drift to the west and northwest.

We continue to monitor the situation closely and will issue additional updates and Alert Level changes as warranted.

Press conferences will continue to be held at the Headquarters office of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The morning press conference is at 9:30 AM.

Heute Morgen gab es eine Periode mit stark erhöhter seismischer Aktivität (~03:30 - 06:04 UTC), die so viel ich erkennen kann diesmal nicht mit einer Eruption oder einem "Harmonic Tremor" geendet hat.

Die Warnstufe liegt aktuell auf der höchsten! Stufe 3 welche für die Vulkane der Kaskaden Kette zur Anwendung kommt.

Toll mit der Web-cam das zu verfolgen. Gestern habe ich damit angefangen und mein Sohn Voltaic hat die ganze Nacht durch immer wieder die Bilder gespeichert, bis es dunkel war.
Vorhin als ich nach Hause kam, setz mich hin und 1. Bild war nichts besonderes, und das 2. gleich voll Rauch und Asche... toll!!! Einfach genial. Die Bilder kann man nachher aneinander hängen und ein Filmchen draus machen.
Ich weiss leider nicht wie ich hier Bilder einfüge, also gibt's leider keins von mir. Aber es hat ja genug die das machen.
